Problems with Using CNC Edge Profiling Tools

Achieving a Better Finish on Polished Edges

The main issues that customers experience using CNC tools are:

  1. Lining
  2. Orange Peel Effect
  3. Insufficient Polish Quality

This article explains each problem in detail, diagnoses the cause and provides advice on how to overcome the issue.

If you need further advice that was not covered by this article please contact us here.

Lining

This is usually caused by setting error in POS 1 – 2 and 3.

  1. Verify the correct stock removal of the metal wheels, verify the stock removal from the polish wheels
  2. Reduce the Feedrate for POS 3 and/or POS 4 to around 25% of the value

Orange Peel Effect

This is usually caused by excessive pressure applied to the polishing tools, POS 4 - 6. It can also be caused by heterogeneous material which have different elements inside with varying degrees of hardness.

  1. Reduce the pressure of POS 4 by decreasing the stock removal value to the minimum setting
  2. Increase feed rate up to 1500mm/min
  3. Reduce stock removal setting to minimum on POS 5
  4. Use POS 6 as normal

Insufficient Polish Quality

This is usually caused by an issue with the setting of the polishing tools, POS 4 - 6.

  1. Increase stock removal to 0.05mm on POS 6 and /or reduce the Feedrate for POS 6 (and eventually on all polishers)

Please be aware that increasing the pressure of the polishing tools will apply more polish, but will decrease their lifespan.
